Today has been so full of awesomeness.
Which I'm glad. Cos yesterday was emotionally draining, though there were some good moments where Andy took me to Justines (which is okay but company was great) with Alex, and also saw Rude Mech's Dionysius in 69 which had nakked actors all rolling around with me being dragged to dancing on stage and rolling around and delightfulness. But so far today: - I found out an old friend of mine who has gone into hiding may come to our wedding. And I told Andy that makes the whole wedding thing worth it. - I got Assassin's Creed II from Peter! - My new lens arrived. - Had delicious Din Ho for lunch. - My vacation starts! Woo! |

Photography geeking out
I completely geeked out on photography today. First of all, yes, I bought myself new glass for my camera. After I bought it, I found out that a newer version is rumored to be coming out next year. Whatever, the newer version would be more expensive anyways. And I've been wanting this new lens for a while now. Merry Christmas to me! Then I went to a free photography lecture by Trey Ratcliff that just blew my mind. His photographs were almost intensely and painfully beautiful. Here's his website. He makes HDR pictures which I've heard about but never tried. But so inspired, I went home and found Uchi and made him pose. So here's my first HDR picture. Basically, HDR is where you take a picture in multiple exposures and merge them together. I'm still learning, so I think my HDR picture doesn't do the technique justice. But I'm so proud of myself for just diving in and making one. It kinda sucks. But getting Uchi to stay still and not having a tripod and also not really knowing what I was doing... One of the 3 non-HDR shots I took. This was the medium exposure. But man, I just went into a zone. I love it when I do that. |

Wheee!
I had originally expected to start my holiday on Monday, but I got a call this afternoon saying that it actually starts tonight. Unfortunately, I still had booth tear down to do today and tomorrow, so I'll be going out starting tomorrow afternoon. I stayed at the booth, packing and organizing, until 4 pm, then in the three hours since then, I've finished tearing down my tent, moving everything that needs to be inside into the trailer; made arrangements for the cat (who will not be able to fixed/broken until after New Years, now); packed two weeks of supplies (I hope!); and taken a shower. Now I'm packing up anything else I might want for the two weeks, and getting ready for the slam tomorrow. I'm glad I had this kick in the butt. I was really slacking on tearing my tent down, and now it's done, and it only took an hour and a half! And man, I'm glad I've fixed my moon roof! I hope. We'll see how it holds up on the 2 hour drive out to Kenefick. |

I've been poking around, looking at how much it'll cost me to insure my new truck. Basic coverage for a 2000 model F250 or Dodge 2500 is about $220 for six months, and if I take out a loan for this truck, like I've been planning on doing, the comprehensive and collision coverage is another $120ish. The interest on the vehicle loan will come out to around $10/month. That's $360/year I could save by buying the truck outright! .... but then I won't be able to put money into my Roth first thing this year, and I do like being able to make my contribution as soon as possible... hrm, things to consider.... Maybe I'll only put in $3k to my Roth and use the rest to buy the truck... |

Busy weekend
Another weekend in which I kept too busy to feel depressed, much. Friday night Erik and I went to see the movie " Invictus," about Nelson Mandela and the South African rugby team. It was really good. Saturday I had a choir rehearsal in the morning, for which the corresponding concert was on Sunday. We sang Charpentier's Midnight Mass at First UU San Diego, for both services (9:30 and 11:30), and Erik came to listen to the second performance. After choir practice on Saturday, I had lunch with work friends at K Sandwiches, then we went to a bookstore for a bit and on to the house where my baby shower will be held in January. We are so lucky to have an SCA friend who's really good at parties offer up her considerably spacious house to us. My work friends Margie and Beth got to see it yesterday so they would know what to expect when planning decorations. Saturday evening, Erik and I went Christmas shopping, mostly for family members, but also for the Friday night happy hour people we hang out with. (Margie was so darn organized and excited about how she had already gotten perfect gifts for all of us that Erik and I had to try catching up.) Sunday ... was the choir concert, then Erik and I met with one of the two doulas that have been recommended as substitutes for Rachel. She brought along a whole bag of tricks and talked with us for almost two hours about all the things she does (and doesn't do) to support mothers in childbirth. Next, will have to meet with the other one and decide which one to hire. Then we did chores - dishes-take-out-the-trash-laundry-grocer ies in one big rush. I made dinner - baked squash and sweet'n'sour beans - and then did some stuff for today's ESL class at work. Finished the evening by watching a Star Trek: Deep Space 9 episode from Netflix. This morning Erik left at the crack of dawn for his work trip to Fargo, so I'll be alone here for another few days. But I think I'll be OK, he'll be back on Thursday, and Friday is the last day of school before winter break, so that is a much-looked-forward-to event. Current Mood: busy |

So, where was I? Ah yes. Yesterday I finished a bodice which will hopefully net me some money for the next couple weeks. I've also finished mending my garb so that's all packed away. And today I went out and bought Plexiglas for my moon roof, so once I get that trimmed down to size hopefully I will have a fully functional vehicle again. |

Saturday Santa Rampage
was a lot of fun. Basically, people dress up Santa-themed, and bar-hopped, as a giant, Ho-ho-ho-ing mob. I really had a good time dancing at Oil Can Harry's, it's been way too long since I've been to that gay bar. I also loved it when the Santas just rushed the streets, and stopped traffic. We yelled: "Santa always has right of way!" "Who's going to run over Santa?" We had a drummer, trombones and trumpets and I loved it. I'm a sucker for parades. Got glittery bunny ears, and when I walked down the streets, people would ask me if I was a bunny or a Santa. Lots of random people talked to me on 6th street. I think bunny ears make me more approachable/flirtable or something. Hrm. Left early to recuperate. I have a cold. Andy is down with a really bad sinus headache. It's miserable here in The House That Must Not Be Named. Also played 2 boardgames today: Hansa Teutonica, Indonesia. Both of which I really enjoyed. Sleep sleep sleep. |

New Year's Party!
Charles and I are hosting a New Year's party this year! Come on over on New Year's Eve at 8pm or later. The usual spread of food will be provided, but BYOB is appreciated. We'll have games available for play also. Casual attire, but dress up if you want! If you plan on showing up try to let us know so we can get a good amount of food. But even if you didn't reply, feel free to show up anyway, even if just for a little bit. We hope to see you there! |

Planningasm, wedding registry, honeymoon
I really love planning. So since I've almost ran out of things to plan for the wedding, I started on to the honeymoon. I've actually told Andy I'm okay with no honeymoon, or postponing it after we've recovered financially from the wedding. But he seems really excited for one, and he wanted to go somewhere different too. Like not Fredericksburg, TX or New York. Basically, nothing under $1000. So we're tentatively planning for Maui. It's $1500 just in tickets to get us there. Ouch. Yesterday I went on research mode for hotels and such. I think it'll be okay since we're mostly registering for a honeymoon fund. So instead of buying us more plates that we don't need, and matching dishware which neither Andy and I care about (I like having each different plate have it's own meaning and memory), we're going to ask our guests to contribute to our honeymoon instead. The honeymoon registry we're looking at is honeyfund.com. And we're also putting a honeymoon jar at our wedding. Here's our tentative registry, it's not set yet: http://www.honeyfund.com/wedding/andyandnadineWe also set up one in Amazon, but it has only 14 items. |

LOL In 2009, lrdfaelan resolves to... Admit my true feelings to queenfrizzle. Pay for my swords on time. Put fifty bad jokes a month into my savings account. Give some gargoyles to charity. Cut down to ten nezhka2846s a day. Keep my sci-fi clean. |

my poor abused car
I'm still picking glass out of my scalp... ( My car knocked some sense into me )Important lessons: - When my hood isn't latched properly, don't wait to close it until I've reached my destination. Pull over and take care of it now! - Baling wire. - Don't be a lazy hippie and put off car maintenance until after that minor road trip. - Be grateful. All these people were really nice. I should send all involved auto body places a card, and I want to get the guy who helped me immediately after the incident something more. Does anyone have any suggestions for what I could get a random stranger for the holidays? A fruit basket? A poinsettia? Now I'm pondering my short term future plans. After the craziness of today, I'm kind of thinking of holing up for the rest of the month and not doing the rest of the things I had planned to do this month, ie Nitzer Ebb and Dallas. I should ponder carefully. And perhaps wait to make a decision until I've actually done everything that I need to do here. I'm *still* getting glass out of my scalp when I scratch. And I think when my scalp got cut it took out my awesome little white hair. Little white hair, I miss you! |

SphereCamp
Well, SphereCamp was a blast, though in retrospect I should have skipped Friday and just gone out on Saturday. I would have been in much better shape physically, and I could have stayed in my nice warm trailer during the coldest days Texas may likely get this year. But I did manage to stay warm, and have a lot of fun despite the cold. I learned some partner poi stuff, how to hula hoop at my knees, I did my first body roll, and learned how to make collapsible hula hoops. Dangit, I still can't remember the really cool thing I learned on Friday, then remembered yesterday afternoon.... I also met some of the object manipulators everyone keeps talking about (Teafaerie and Burning Dan; Adam D; and Noel, Greg and Margaret from the Vulcan Crew in San Fransisco). Of course I was able to see the Alien again, as well as some other folks I hadn't seen since AZ. Last week I started to move into the trailer where I'll be living for the rest of my stay in Toontown (ie, the residential area by TRF). It's 21 feet long, 25 years old, and has been a stationary bachelor pad for the last several years, so after spending most of Thursday cleaning and replacing light bulbs, I threw the basics in and spent a wonderful evening enjoying a radiator-style space heater and proper walls and a ceiling. I cannot say enough how nice this setup is. I can't wait until I get my own trailer in 2011. Tomorrow I have a lot planned. Doctors appointment, laundry, auto body repair to get my hood functional again, Home Depot, housecleaning, and finally an appointment to fit the bodice I'm making for a coworker. I'm bringing a lot of hand sewing to kill time while I'm waiting for most of that to happen. Then this week I need to a) get better, b) finish the bodice and my mending so I can pack my garb, c) watch Dollhouse so I'm caught up with my Dollhouse-watching buddy in AZ, d) go to see Nitzer Ebb in Houston on Saturday. |

Continuing to build my self-esteem by doing some work
Accomplished today:
- Wrote three pages of comprehension questions for the ESL book on Gandhi
- Went to prenatal yoga class with Erik
- Met with the two friends organizing my baby shower
- Made a baby gift registry at Target.com, because they told me it needed to go on the invitations
- Made a list of email addresses to send Evite invitations to
- Bought groceries, including some low-sugar granola bars and breakfast cereal, at Henry's
- Did laundry, which I now need to fold and put away
I will still need to get to school as early as possible tomorrow morning, to make copies before class. But it should be OK. Tomorrow evening, when Erik is at gaming, I think I might order those Heifer International gifts and address my small amount of Christmas cards. Current Mood: productive |

houston, future in-laws, photography, friends, diet
Went to Houston this weekend, hanging out with Andy's parents. His mom and I talked wedding stuff, of course. And we had girl time watching Houston Ballet's Jubilee of dance. Saw a really good Stanton Welch choreo called "Fingerprints" but found the rest (Bayadere, Wheeldon) okay. We also ate at Feast, a really highly rated restaurant that ex-NY times critic Frank Bruni thought great. I actually found the food to be mediocre compared to Austin's own Parkside. A close friend of mine got engaged! So between Leslie and Cathy, I'm well surrounded by girlfriends to chatter wedding stuff with. This makes me very very happy. It's nice to be able to chatter with people in the some stage, same perspectives. I was telling Andy how much I enjoy being engaged. It's that nice transition phase. And he was like: "You just like planning a wedding." And I really do. I love the spreadsheets and todo lists and planning stuff. Bought a book on digital wedding photography. Trying to hone my skills. I want two more lenses: an 85 mm, 1.4, and a 24 mm 2.8. The first one is over $1000 though. So that may have to wait for a bit. So far, Andy's inviting 124 people. I'm inviting 90. I was like, Andy, you can't invite the entire improv community!! He's just super generous about stuff like that, while I'm more ruthless. He did try to trim the list some though. We do have quite a bit out-of-towners in the list, so maybe that will keep the number to a manageable amount. But then there's also people who may bring dates that we didn't anticipate. I've been going to the gym/working out, about 6 times a week. I like challenges. I like having a goal to work towards to. On a more relaxed note, I'm in the last available book of the Harry Dresden files, will be sad once I'm finished. Then I'll just have to wait each year for his latest books. |
